Massimo Theatre
Of neoclassical-eclectic style, it was begun in 1875 by the architect Giovan Battista Basile and completed by his son Ernesto Basile. It is the largest opera house in Italy and the third largest in Europe.
Politeama Theatre
It is an important example of neoclassical architecture, designed by architect Giuseppe Damiani Almejda. The Politeama theatre dominates with its Pompeian style in Piazza Ruggero Settimo, one of the liveliest squares in the city.
Cathedral
Among the city’s most beautiful and majestic monuments due to the mixture of forms and styles in a single architectural body. A predominant Norman style in which different contaminations result from the many populations that have alternated over the decades.
Martorana Church
One of the most fascinating Byzantine churches in Italy, built in 1143 by Admiral George of Antioch, a faithful servant of the Norman King Roger II. A treasure trove of history for the variety of architectural styles that have followed one another over the centuries.
Orto Botanico
A majestic open-air museum whose origins date back to the last decades of the 17th century. It houses a great variety of plant species, many originating from tropical and subtropical regions, making it a place rich in expression, scents and colours.
Quattro Canti
Its perfectly octagonal structure is formed by alternating streets (Via Vittorio Emanuele and Via Maqueda). The statues represent the rivers of Palermo, the allegory of the seasons, the historical rulers of the city and the patron saints of Palermo.
Abatellis Palace
An example of Gothic-Catalan architecture, located in the Kalsa district. It dates back to the late 15th century and is currently home to the Regional Gallery of Sicily, which houses numerous works of art.
